The short daylight can lead to seasonal depression and other changes in mood and mental health

Promote less physical activity, which affects both physical and mental well-being

I wrote this post to share ideas to help you feel well and take care of yourself this winter time

10 Winter wellness tips for a slow and calm season, simple and practical tips to get through this Winter season

1-take things slow

With the busy season and changing weather.

it is best to slow down a bit while focusing on your health and what’s important with clarity

I get that it’s not easy because i don’t want to slow down, but to do more only increases the stress and overwhelm I feel.

Taking things slow is the easy and obvious answer

It’s liberating and makes you feel calm

However, you still have things to do, right?! You can still do that by combining it with the next tip

Taking things slow is about precise choices and precise negations

What you need to do, what is the top priority, and what you need to stop doing

2-make a small but concrete list of work and other things to do

Consider the major events that are going on right now ie. the holidays and the season.

As you plan what you focus on

Here is how you do it:

1-Choose what you need to get done right now

Write down what you need and can get done right now

What is important to you this winter?

example: Not getting sick, having quality time with family, finishing some project for work, and last bits of content(1 blog post, 5, prepping for the new year

You can go by area

2-eliminate everything that can wait until later

What are you not doing? What are you postponing? What are you putting a hold on? What are you delaying and putting off?

3-create a to-do list or schedule it on a calendar with a time limit

3-consume immune-supporting food and drinks

They are rich in supportive components and help you stay healthy and strong throughout winter without getting sick

Food rich in vitamins: C, A, B, Magnesium, such as turmeric, lemon, oranges, bell pepper, dark chocolate

Supplement with Vitamin D

Be intentional toward the food you consume. There are many ways to incorporate any of these foods

The simplest ways are to add on to any typical meal, take with a snack, make into a juice, or a hot beverage

For me I drink lemon, orange, and honey juice every other day and

I add turmeric with black pepper to different teas I drink, mainly moringa and hibiscus teas

4-adopt a practice to combat winter blues

Due to short days and the cold, you would notice that your mood changes so does your energy

Which will affect how you live your days, what you get done, and how you feel

If you are not doing something to help your mental health before. Now, it is the best time to do it

There are many practices to help you do that, like Journaling, meditation, therapy, sunlight, laughing, and gratitude…etc

Choose one thing and do it while observing its effects on you, so you can change it if it’s not helping or add to it

i journal and watch things that make me laugh

5-reflect and reset for the new year

It’s imperative for growth, understanding, learning, improvement, adjusting, feedback, and guided action later

1-sit in a quiet place, grab a pen and notebook, or do it on your computer, and start reflecting on the year

after that, do some reset to your house and yourself

2-Organize cluttered places, clean and tidy, throw things that you no longer need, want, or that are just pure garbage

I am changing my bedsheets to new ones, organizing my props, dusting, and finding a place for my new books

Here are two posts that have my process and journaling prompts for the yearly reflection I do

6-consume hot and warm drinks

It’s the perfect winter companion that will warm your body nd your spirit

Especially if you combine it with cozy atmosphere candles, a blanket, maybe a book or a funny movie

and sipping on a Hot chocolate, Spiced Cider, chai, teas..etc

Also, adding warming spices like turmeric, cinnamon, and ginger to these drinks is great

for immunity, as they are anti-inflammatory and contain antioxidants, too

I combine these herbs with teas, especially hibiscus and moringa, as i drink them daily

7-change your skincare a bit

to prevent dryness and damage to your skin barrier due to the cold weather and dry air

Here are two things to help with that

1-Use a humidifier to combat dry air

2-incoprate Thick moisturizing creams and hydrating serums

Ingredients to look for: glycerine, hyaluronic acid, allantoin, panthenol, stearyl alcohol(fatty alcohol), paraffin oil, paraffin wax(if you are ok with it)

Specifically for this winter, I am using Bepanthen skin moisturizer for dry skin. It is surprisingly light and absorbs fast while keeping you moisturized for long

i always use a hydrating toner. Right now, I am using Hydrium watery toner by Cosrx

Isntree hyaluronic acid water essence adds extra hydration and replenishes moisture

Isntree hyalonic acid low-PH cleansing foam. It doesn’t strip the skin of moisture and leave it dry

I suffered a lot last year in the winter because I didn’t change the product I use. I used the type of products i always use, but they don’t work anymore.

My skin, for some reason gotten dry. It was normal before, but since last year, it has changed

You should assess your skin needs and change or keep products based on that

8-intentionally getting sunlight

To get vitamin D and improve your mood and energy

You can do it in many ways, such as walking, doing some errands during the day, opening the windows..etc

And going on a walk in the daylight kills two birds with one stone: you’ll get physical activity/movement in, and be in the sunlight

I’d say going outside during the day is essential, even if for 10 minutes,

9-do a simple physical activity daily

Physical activity is always important, no matter the season, and especially this season, as it provides a burst of energy that we all need

Not to mention it is important for your overall health and longevity

The easiest is walking for 10-30 minutes in the day to get sunlight in too

Stretches, short hit workout, short weightlifting session, etc

I try to have a short weightlifting session daily, with a weekly hit workout session

Some stretches every 2 weeks or so

Just choose what you enjoy

10-seek connection and comfort

It’s important for our mental health and well-being

It helps you feel less lonely, feel connected, and calm

Here are a few ways

1-Schedule and plan time with family and friends

2-Adopt cozy hobbies and activities for the season, like indoor sports, knitting, coloring, reading,

Reading isn’t only comforting but also intellectual. You exercise your brain while you feel comfort and calm, whether the book is fiction or non-fiction

3-Create a cozy atmosphere with candles, a blanket, a book or a movie, and a hot beverage.

I have a daily time scheduled to be around my family

And weekly time to be around people in parks

(it’s helpful for me to be around people, even strangers, also while i get some errands done)
